What Can Earthquakes Do?
3/24/15
By: Kaitlynne Connors

Have you ever experienced an earthquake? They can be very deadly and life changing at times. An earthquake has many effects on the Earth, the people, and on property. Earthquakes are caused by the rock underground moving and rubbing together causing a release of energy. Some earthquakes are just small but others can be very dangerous.

The amount of damage an earthquake can do to the Earth is phenomenal. An earthquake on December 26 2004 in Indonesia was so destructive, it changed the planet in its shape, it slightly moved the North Pole 1 inch East. Scientist even found that the Earth even spins a little faster than it did before! 2.68 microseconds was decreased from our day. Another example of what earthquakes can do to the Earth was on March 11, 2011 a magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck offshore about 80 miles east of Sendai creating a tsunami. devastating more than 1 million Japan residents. Some of these cases are actually the worse. This not always the case but it can happen. There are different levels of earthquakes.

The effects an earthquake can cause for people all differ. There is a wide variety from being completely homeless, to just not being able to drive your car on a certain road so you have to take the long way around. Many lives can be lost during an earthquake if the magnitude is very high, and the people are around buildings, they could fall and kill you. Even your house can be highly damaged and cause very expensive repair bills. The Loma Prieta earthquake killed more than 60 people, injuring almost 4,000.

An earthquake can be a very costly situation. If its bad enough, prices can range all the way to $55,000 on your insurance claim. In the Loma Prieta incident, the final repair bill for the earthquake there, the total was $6 billion dollars! That is a very large amount of money. The span of the bay bridge collapsed, tens of thousands of buildings were damaged or destroyed.

The overall effects of an earthquake are very substantial. All earthquakes are all different and vary. The outcomes of earthquakes are all very different as well. The effects of such an earthquake could be emotional, physical, and you can lose a lot in such a catastrophe. Knowing all of this information is important because you should always be fully aware of the effects of this. This gives you a good image of the effects. In as little as 15 seconds your world could be turned upside down.

Civil War Journal; short response

In lines 1-64, she wanted to work in the hospital because she couldn't fight in the war. But somehow she felt the need to contribute in some type of way so one thing that she could do is help the injured soldiers. In lines 87-117 she then began realizing how the hospital is. As she says "till noon I trot, trot, giving out rations, cutting up food for helpless boys, washing faces, teaching my attendants how beds are made or floors swept, dressing wounds, taking Dr. FitzPatrick's orders, (privately wishing all the time that he would be more gentle with my big babies), dusting tables, sewing bandages, keeping my tray tidy, rushing up & down after pillows, bed linen, sponges, book & directions, till it seems as if I would joyfully pay down all I posses for a fifteen minutes rest."

Butterfly poem

When spring time comes, theres the one thing thats as beautiful as can be
It just may be the butterfly floating around a tree
Although they may be hard to find
They are very very kind

You do not want to touch their wings
For they might never be able to take flight again
Even though what you did was an accident

When spring comes
Theres always butterflies
Zooming past your side

Divergent

For my book, I am reading Divergent. I really enjoyed this book, I thought it was very interesting. In the book, Beatrice is Abnegation. There are five different factions. Abnegation is a faction that is completely selfless. So selfless that they can't even look at themselves in the mirror. The abnegation work for the government and help the factionless. Beatrice is 16 and its the choosing ceremony. On this day each of the 16 year olds will choose a faction to live in for the rest of their lives. You can choose outside of your faction but you will not be permitted to see your family without supervision. Beatrice has chosen to live the life of the Dauntless. Only to find out that she is in great danger. But because of she is Divergent. Because she is Divergent, she poses a threat to the government. If the government finds out then they will kill her. She poses a threat to the government because she can control the simulation tests for the Dauntless initiates. Will she be able to make it? Thats for you to find out.

On my winter break, I didn't do much but I still had a great time. During the first week before Christmas, I spent most of my time with my friend Kianna. I had met Kianna for the first time at camp Barnes last summer. That was the first time I had gotten to see her since summer camp. I went to her house that Friday and went home on Monday and she came with me. Since Christmas Eve was wednesday she had to go home on Tuesday. After christmas I went back to her house on Friday and stayed there until the day before new years eve. she came to my house in christmas eve and me and her both went to my friend Declans to watch the ball drop at 12 p.m. For most of my break, I spent it with her but it was time well spent.
